Panasonic Lumix DMC-FS16
Panasonic have been working to deliver high quality pictures that can be taken easily and in a compact, stylish, slim camera body. With the Lumix DMC-FS16 they have succeeded in creating a device that delivers all of these features.
The DMC-FS16 is equipped with a 28mm 4x optical zoom, as well as an intelligent zoom function that can boost the zoom to 5x, all while being supported by image stabilizing technology; giving the user sharper, clearer images.
Aside from the 28 scenic modes, the DMC-FS16 comes with Intelligent Auto (IA) mode. This mode is designed to make picture taking as easy as possible in any conditions. The DMC-FS16 also offers burst, flash burst and high-speed burst options, although the latter two options are only available at a reduced size image.
High Definition (HD) videos can be recorded at a resolution of 1280 x 720 dpi and these can easily be uploaded to Facebook and Youtube using a PC. You can also use motion JPEG, to shoot VGA quality videos at a resolution of 640 x 480 dpi.
During testing the camera was ready to take pictures within only a few seconds of turning it on. The menus were simple to navigate, with good explanations of what each shooting mode was for. During use the camera was quick to focus in and in single shot mode there was only a delay of two to three seconds between shots.
The DMC-FS16 consistently produces good images with accurate replication of colours. While using the intelligent auto mode you will be hard pressed to find a picture you do not like. Landscape shots where the sky is included are superb, although the camera did struggle with lens flare and underexposure when the sun was in the picture.
The battery is lasts long enough to take up to 270 photos. In my testing I only charged it once and it never showed signs of running out of power.
The DMC-FS16 is a good addition to the Intelligent Auto range of Lumix cameras. There are quite a few cameras with these specifications, in this price range, but the DMC-FS16 is one of the stand out performers.
Nikon Coolpix L120
The ridiculously low priced Coolpix L120 has raised the bar for aspiring super-zoom producers. This camera boasts a 21x optical zoom lens in a stylish body for under £200.
The main functional innovation of the L120 is the zoom rocker. It is positioned on the lens barrel in a way that makes zooming easier and smoother.
Rather than the Lithium-Ion batteries in common use by compacts and super-zooms, the L120 uses AA batteries. This gives you the option of using rechargeable batteries and when in a pinch you can purchase batteries from the local store. Although this adds to the weight of the camera, it gives it a feel of substance in your hands.
Those photographers who are not too concerned with perfect image quality, or are budget conscious will enjoy the Coolpix L120 with its large array of features and budget price tag.
